If you’re planning a senior photo shoot, there’s probably no better time than the present. But before you go into your first shoot with excitement, it pays to have some tips in mind. Here are some things to keep in mind as we discuss preparing for your senior photos:
You do not have much time as you think.
Be sure that your haircut is fresh. Don’t stress about getting a new, trendy do; stick with what looks best on you.
Your hair shouldn’t look like it’s been styled by an ally with zero styling products, but rather by an experienced stylist who knows how to deal with the inevitable shedding of strands during this process. A good hairstylist will also help reduce flyaways and frizzies in photos—and make sure that all those curls are put back into place without any assistance from gravity!
Avoid trying things you are uncertain about. Example: A dark makeup you’ve never done before.
Avoid wearing makeup that’s too dark.
Use colors that compliment your skin tone.
If you need coverage for any blemishes, use concealer instead of foundation—which can make your face look less fresh than it is!
If you’re not sure what makeup to use, ask someone who knows more about photography.
Don’t forget to bring along an extra touch-up supply of makeup. You’ll need to do small touch-ups during your session.
If you’re lucky, this won’t happen! But if it does, don’t worry—you can use the same products in your kit as before, with a few new ones added in for good measure.
Makeup can get messy and smudged when you’re wearing it all day, so make sure that no dust or dirt is building up on any surfaces where it will be applied.
On the day of your photo shoot, eat light or you may feel bloated afterward. Don’t forget to drink water throughout the day, too.
Eat lightly.
If you’re planning on eating before your photo shoot, try to stick to a light breakfast—a small bowl of oatmeal or Greek yogurt with berries is perfect. Avoid greasy foods like cheese sandwiches, fried chicken, and French fries, as they can make you feel sluggish.
Also, avoid sugary drinks like soda or fruit juice because they may increase bloating in your stomach later on.
Figure out how much time you’ll need for hair and makeup so that you’re not rushed on picture day.
Usually, each service takes an hour. You also want to consider the travel time of the photographer.
How much time will it take to do your makeup and hair?
When should I start getting ready?
How long should you eat before the photo shoot starts?
How long does it take to travel, including any necessary stops along the way, from your home to the spot where the photographer is waiting for you?
Bring along some classic accessories, such as your letter jacket, and your instrument. If you play sports you may want to bring along your baseball cap or uniform, football, or volleyball.
Think about bringing something to go with your outfit because it might alter how the photographer sees you. For instance, if you’re wearing a skirt and jacket together but an earring with a big pendant in the middle, the earring will detract from the focus of your outfit, which is what matters!
If you want to avoid getting caught up in any potential mishaps during production, you might want to take off any jewelry before beginning your photo shoot. If not, it’s impossible to predict how long it would take you to get back into character.
Lastly, bring someone along to help you pack up your clothing, pack up your accessories and help you change outfits.
If you’re going to be outdoors, find out the forecast for picture day in case there might be rain or snow; that will determine whether you need umbrellas or gloves for the pictures.
If it’s raining and/or snowing, the other thing to consider is an indoor studio. The indoor studio typically rents for $75 an hour and goes into the facility.
Remember, it’s all about having fun! The most successful senior photos are those that capture the person you know and love in vivid color. You’ll be amazed at how much more powerful those images can be when used for promotional purposes.
